Oral food immunotherapy

At the clinic we offer oral immunotherapy to a variety of foods.

OIT is designed to help your child gradually tolerate a specific food (allergen) that usually causes them to have an allergic reaction.

  • Allergens include nuts, milk, and egg

As part of the OIT program, your child will be required to consume a safe amount of their allergen daily. You will be provided with directions on how much to give them each day.

  • This safe amount is the OIT dose.

The initial OIT starting dose will be individualised for your child to ensure that it can be consumed and tolerated without reaction.

  • The starting dose will be determined safely in the clinic, under the supervision of your child’s allergist.

OIT doses are slowly increased over time until the desired ‘maintenance dose’ is reached. The maintenance dose amount will vary depending on how well your child is adjusting to the OIT program.

After a period of daily maintenance OIT dosing, we may gradually reduce the regularity your child eats the allergen.

  • This will vary based on each child’s case.
